EMDR Therapy

What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing – or EMDR – is an effective, evidence-based therapeutic approach that helps people heal from traumatic experiences and adverse life events. EMDR is helpful in treating a wide range of mental health concerns, from PTSD to Anxiety to Eating Disorders. It differs from traditional talk therapy in that it utilizes bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, to facilitate the brain’s natural healing processes. Through EMDR, clients are able to address the core experiences often underlying their symptoms and find healing on a deeper level than talk therapy provides.

What does the process look like?

EMDR therapy involves eight structured phases and is very flexible and adaptable. EMDR sessions are typically 60-90 minutes long and the duration of EMDR therapy varies broadly depending on what you want to address and how long re-processing takes. Some people choose to incorporate talk therapy into EMDR therapy as well. Essentially, you’re in control of the process at all times and we encourage you to communicate your needs to your therapist.

In the early phases, you and your therapist will work on identifying specific issues or memories that are causing you discomfort or contributing to your symptoms. You will also spend time building the therapeutic relationship and developing resources and coping skills to prepare for when you begin reprocessing traumatic events. During the reprocessing phase, the therapist will guide you through a series of structured steps that involve recalling memories while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements or tapping. This unique approach helps your brain process and integrate traumatic experiences, allowing you to reframe negative beliefs and reduce emotional pain.

Throughout the process, you’ll find a safe space to explore your feelings, supported by your therapist, and you’re always in control of the process and can stop at anytime. As you progress through the phases of EMDR, you may start to notice shifts in your perception, leading to increased resilience and emotional well-being. With each session, you take crucial steps toward reclaiming your narrative, freeing yourself from the past’s hold, and nurturing a brighter future. The journey through EMDR can be life-changing, offering not just relief but also empowerment to navigate life’s challenges with newfound confidence.

How is EMDR Helpful?

During sessions, clients are encouraged to recall distressing memories while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, promoting the integration of memories into a more adaptive and less emotionally charged format. As clients work through their experiences, they often report a significant reduction in symptoms of anxiety, depression, and PTSD. EMDR therapy fosters empowerment, enabling individuals to reclaim their lives and develop healthier coping mechanisms, ultimately supporting their journey towards emotional well-being and resilience. Embrace Strength Counseling offers a safe, compassionate environment where clients can explore the transformative power of EMDR therapy to uncover and embrace their inner strength.
